The sporty 2014 Honda CR-Z combines sportiness and fuel economy in a hybrid package that Honda touts as still being fun to drive.

The performance gains come thanks to some engine improvements and a new lithium-ion battery pack which provides greater voltage to the electric motor. All told, the 1.5-liter four-cylinder and the electric motor combine to produce 130-horsepower and 140 pounds-feet of torque in models with the six-speed manual (127 pounds feet with the CVT).

This model has a “Plus Sport System” which places an “S+” button on the right side of the steering wheel. When the battery is charged to over 50%, pressing this button gives the CR-Z a boost of power from the battery for five seconds, great for passing on the highway or for some extra oomph coming out of a corner.

Fuel economy ratings check in at 36/39 mpg city/highway with the CVT and 31/38 mpg city/highway with the manual, but I usually get more performance out of a tank of gas.

From the outside, the CR-Z’s wedge shape is aggressive and somewhat of an homage to the old CRX. Up front, a grille and front bumper with more pronounced air inlets and fog light recesses augment the car’s sportiness.

The 2014 CR-Z offers seating for two passengers inside a futuristic interior that is swathed in blue ambient light. Instead of a traditional center console, controls for the ventilation system are mounted on a pod to the right of steering wheel while a pod to the left contains the different drive settings. Standard features include automatic climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, and a backup camera. 

The CR-Z also comes with plenty of standard safety features, such as active head restraints, six airbags, and an electronic stability system, and won a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS.
