Safest Used Trucks

Trucks are by definition safe.  The larger and heavier your vehicle, the more protected you are inside of it.  That being said, here is a rundown of the used trucks that have achieved particular recognition for their safety features.

Most notable is the 2007 Toyota Tundra.  The New York Times’ Cheryl Jensen in November 2007,  it was the first pickup truck to garner a high safety rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.  The Tundra comes equipped with electronic stability control, a feature designed to prevent the driver from losing control while skidding or in other emergency situations during which ability to maneuver is crucial.  For whatever reason, however, the 2007 Tundra’s E.S.C. does not operate when the vehicle is in 4-wheel drive mode.  It would seem important for it to work in that situation, since people often use 4WD to drive in the snow.  Consumer Reports criticized the Tundra’s safety award for this reason.  Nevertheless, E.S.C. can certainly do its job in other safety-compromised situations.

Jensen also reports that other trucks were considered for this high safety rating, such as the Ford F150, Dodge Ram and Nissan Titan, all from 2007.  These models fell short because of inadequate restraint in their headrests, which did not do enough to prevent injury in the event of a crash from the rear.  It should be noted also, however, that rear-end crashes take far fewer lives than front- and side-on crashes.  Whiplash and other spine injuries are more the province of rear-enders, and although these do not kill, should also not be taken lightly.

If we fast-forward to 2010 – particularly if you are willing to pay more for a model from this year – the Ford F150 enters the good graces of the safety-conscious.  This model gets a fame boost from senator Scott Brown, the first republican senator to be elected in Massachusetts in 30 years.  Perhaps appropriately, he stands by his F150 pickup.  Kelly Blue Book, Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and Consumer Reports all agree, according to an article February, 2010 article by Rich Blake of ABC News.  This model earns especially high marks for brakes.

Of course if you want to be super-safe, not many models can beat the tank-like qualities of the Hummer H2, 2005.  This model gets rave reviews on carmax.com for its off-road capabilities and styling.  It received 5-star safety ratings in the category of Front, Side, Passenger, Rear Seat, and Rollover from the National Traffic Highway Safety Association.
