Looking for an Alternative to the Minivan.

The problem with Minivans is that they are long on practicality and short on personality. For many their automobile is more than just a point-A-to-point-B solution. They see their vehicle as an extension of themselves. While they may be perfect little people hauling, car seat accommodating, gear-toting vehicles people just cannot get over the suburban soccer mom persona. But once the ultrasound technician informs you, “there are twins in that belly,” the jellybean shaped die is cast and the alternatives seem to come down to Caravan, Sienna or Odyssey. Before you pull the trigger on your commitment to sliding doors you may want to consider some alternatives just to be sure.

Large SUVs like Chevy Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and Toyota Sequoia offer loads of cargo and people space in a decidedly brawny package of great equipment and comfort. MSRPs start in the upper $30 thousand range but are often offset by some the largest incentives in the industry as these one-time profit-mobiles have fallen out favor with the threat of $4 per gallon gas looming. Buyers who keep cars long-term and do significant towing may want to look at a Large SUV as most are based on half-ton pickup platforms engineered to do heavy-duty work for 200,000 miles and beyond.

Three row SUVs and CUVs are great minivan substitutes to consider. Many are derived from car and anybody platforms that lend car-like driving dynamics and fuel economy. Prices are also comparable to Minivans. The quirky Ford Flex is abound with interior room and is as comfortable as they come. Its polarizing looks break the CUV mold and stand out from the crowd. The available 2-2-2 configuration with second row bucket seats allow for terrific access to a surprisingly accommodating third row. The Mazda CX-9 strikes a favorable balance between nimble performance, fuel efficiency and sporty styling. Seven people magically fit into this midsize offering with good room and slew of advanced features that please driver and passengers alike. The Dodge Durango mixes handsome looks, top-notch interior design and premium performance into one terrific SUV. The standard V6 powerplant employs advanced technology to deliver impressive fuel economy for such a sizable vehicle. Other SUV/CUV choices worth pondering include the Subaru Tribeca, Ford Explorer, Chevy Traverse and Toyota Highlander. Three row SUVs and CUVs may be the right choice for those who crave a sportier vehicle and whose toddlers may soon become school age kids.

The final Minivan alternative is … (wait for it) a Minivan. Honestly, nothing beats a Minivan for being a Minivan. The unique combination of spaciousness, interior access, comfort and functionality is a winning formula for families. To get over the docile “mom jeans” stigma you may want to watch a few swagger wagon clips on YouTube and throw some flame decals on the side. Like the NASA Space Shuttle this ultimate family shuttle is revered for what it can do, not the outward appearance. It looks like Mom was right when she said, “It’s what is on the inside that counts.” But if you are determine to sidestep the Minivan trap just make certain there is enough substance to match the style.
